Did you know that Natalie Portman, the hottest movie star of our time, is a native of Southampton? Southampton is in England, which means it is close to Paris and other locations popularly known as the Paris of the English-speaking world. That is where she was born. What does this have to do with her movie career?

Natalie Portman grew up in a household with two very different parents. Her mother, Jane Campion, played professional tennis at the Wimbledon Championship in England, and her father, Donald Sutherland, was a cricketing legend. Both players gave their daughters a very different view of what the world was like. Young Natalie was fascinated by the fast pace of the game, but her father’s cricketing achievements put her off playing the sport as he was, by the way, a vegetarian.

Her parents had good role models in fashion and, in particular, the designer Mary Quant, and the actor Marlon Brando. These were the people who shaped her career and life. But Natalie Portman did not grow up idolizing these great personalities.

Natalie Portman’s name means ‘mermaid’ in French. A ‘mermaid’ is a mythical creature of mythological origin, usually depicted as a female being with a long, slender body. In the old days, mermaids were said to be very beautiful and to sleep beneath the ocean’s surface in an underwater palace. The name Natalie Portman, meaning ‘mystical sea,’ also brings to mind this image. It is one of the few movies where people think of the actress as a mermaid.

When she was a child, she spent many summer holidays on the beach, playing in the surf, surrounded by toys and shopping, trying to get a good deal for buying beach vacations. She was definitely not aware of the film industry, or its salary structure.

The chance to meet Naomi Watts, whom she saw during a youth camp, would have given her her first taste of the Hollywood life: the glamour, the gadgets, the big dress and the expensive lifestyle. But the glamorous scenes on television turned out to be more depressing.

So, when the opportunity came to meet her heroine Natalie Portman did not reject it. All she needed was a reason to believe in herself. The only thing that mattered to her at that time was that she would marry Tom Cruise, the family friend, who was also a star.

Natalie Portman took a year off from her college to take care of her mother and joined the acting training courses. She was very young, she was given no choice but to sit through all the useless classes. One day, during her summer vacation, she drove down to Calabasas to meet Cruise, a job that seemed to come out of nowhere.

Cruise was looking for a movie that would make a big splash and offered Portman the part in “Throwing Stone,” which he had written. This was something new for her, because she had never heard of Cruise, and when she heard that “Throwing Stone” was going to be directed by Steven Spielberg, she fell in love with it. In addition, she met Cruise, and he was really happy to have a promising starlet in his company.

The whole experience changed Natalie Portman, making her realize what a difference the right acting training could make. In this case, the attention she got from the “Throwing Stone” star did not last long, because there were lots of other movies that came along, none of which she was too interested in. She had other ambitions, like getting married, and having children. Not all actresses were like Natalie Portman, who went on to become an acclaimed international actress, a Best Actress award winner in her native France, and a role model for beauty queens everywhere.
