Samuel L. Jackson
This is my favorite quote by Samuel L. Jackson. I think it describes what America is all about. The little guy against the big guys. America’s future looks bright in his view, and there is some truth to his words.
I met Samuel L. Jackson years ago in a hotel lobby. He asked me how I liked my steak cooked and what kind of wine I preferred to have with it. I told him I didn’t drink but did like well-done. He gave me a funny look, and then he laughed. I couldn’t tell if he was kidding or not.
Well, that same day he was in an interview with a news report about his role in the movie, Gangs of New York. He talked about his life in general and how hard he had it growing up. It is so funny when you watch it.
But the whole reason I like his comments is that they are accurate. We were all too busy fighting each other for jobs and just trying to get by in our own little ways. In the movie, he was someone who didn’t have a lot of money, yet he did everything he could to make his way up. What a real American can do and still remain patriotic and feel good about it. That’s a lesson we need to learn and instill in ourselves.
Samuel L. Jackson has been around forever. He got his start as a musician and acted in his school plays. After being in the movies, he did all sorts of television shows and movies before turning to direct and working on stage shows. He also is a playwright who has many books and plays to his credit.
He has always been a great actor. He is very confident in his abilities and I really enjoyed watching him. He was funny and yet serious at the same time. It was great to see him both in films and in theatre.

This past weekend, I saw his newest movie, Oldboy. It’s a thriller and not like any other I have seen. I had never heard of the director before. It was a funny, emotional film. It reminded me of some of the early films that won Best Picture Oscars.
I’ve been told Old Boy will soon be released in other countries, too. However, it is only available in its home country of Japan. It might be time for me to come to check it out. I haven’t been to the United States yet, but I am really excited to see it.
Movies really do teach us so much about life and about ourselves. They help us make decisions in life that would otherwise seem impossible. Even though it is still called a movie, the movie Old Boy is a film that matters.
The movie is about a man named Kan, who was a Korean War POW who was captured by the Japanese and taken to a prison camp on the island of North Korea. There he was used as a slave. He managed to escape a few years later and went on to build his own family, even though he had to fight for it.
In this movie, Kan talks about how far Koreans have come in their country and how far North Koreans have fallen. He goes into detail about how life used to be. It is a sad tale, but I’ve always admired Kan and thought he was a real hero. Some of the things I have learned from watching this movie are: Never give up hope. Keep your head up and continue to persevere. And realize that movie making is a form of art. The art comes from the heart and soul, too.
